One Small Step interviews can take place between strangers or between friends and family members. The goal is to bring together members of the same community who may differ politically to have a respectful, personal, and potentially relationship-building conversation.
If you’re recording with a stranger as part of a local project, you’ll most likely complete a survey and be matched with an interview partner in advance of your recording. While you and your partner may have some differences in political opinion, you most likely will also have a lot in common. One Small Step is a chance to learn about this person and for you both to share the experiences which have shaped your lives.
I recorded two [times] — one with a stranger and one with a friend. The conversation with a stranger was easier! I have carried the recognition that we aren’t that dissimilar forward into political conversations with others.
